From the genus Flavivirus within the family Flaviviridae, West Nile virus primarily infects birds, but is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Found in relatively clean, freshwater habitats in addition to brackish or polluted water throughout North America, Culiseta inornata is considered a vector of both Western equine encephalitis and West Nile virus (secondary vector).
